2009 Scarlet Boa

Scene #79

Kara had exactly 10 minutes left to find the grimoire that her latest demon kill had thrown into the field just as she took him down. If she didn't, Maximus, Demon King, would pull her back down to hell, cackling the whole way! She had been there 100 years, doing everything she had been told, directed, forced and driven to do in order to return to earth permanently.

9 minutes.......

She had no special senses by which to find this piece of -------! She had no special sight, no special sense of smell, nothing left of her previous life, so it was time to get down on her knees and scrabble around in this filthy, overgrown lot. It was the middle of the night, pitch black where she was and, consequently, she had even less senses than she would have if it were light outside. Good for dispatching a rogue demon, but not for finding something that was black and would cause her extreme pain when and if she touched it.

8 minutes..........

It smelled horrible down here. She sometimes forgot how lax, careless and filthy humans could be. It didn't matter, though. She had a reason for coming back to earth. She had to right a horrible wrong she had perpetrated the last time she lived in this world. Beings like her were not supposed to have a conscience, not supposed to care whether they hurt anyone, not supposed to fall in love.

7 minutes.....

Crawling through trash, sticky from something she didn't want to guess at, bloody from crawling over a broken bottle...Hell, she didn't even heal normally anymore!

6 minutes.....

There!---No, it was just a pile of flattened cardboard and it didn't burn like fire when she touched it. Come on...come on!!! She had to keep going no matter what.

5 minutes....

"My dear. You know you're wasting my time and yours! Get up from that morass of filth and come home with me." "Leave me alone, Max. I still have 5 minutes left." She continued to crawl around with both hands, grabbing anything she could get them around. There was no way she was going back down there. At least, now that Max was following her around, she had some semblance of light, even though it was red. She was grabbing bottles, newspapers, fast food wrappers-----fast food----EEUUWW-----and flinging it all around her. She had to find it!!!

4 minutes....

She tried to close her mind down and continue to sift through everything on the ground. Eyes on the prize, she kept chanting to herself. She had heard that from one of the fiends she'd brought back down to hell a few months ago and figured it was as appropriate a saying as anything at this time. She kept digging around. It had to be here somewhere!!!!!

3 minutes.....

She was moving her hands back and forth as she moved forward, something sharp and probably rusty was now sticking out of the fourth finger of her right hand. It didn't matter, as long as she found that damn grimoire. The pain she was in now was nothing compared to what she would feel if she ever got her hands around the book.

2 minutes....

She had moved out of the grass and onto cement covered with broken glass, still running her hands back and forth in front of her. Her heart started racing as she saw what she thought might be the book. She moved to stand, only to feel Max's boot on her back. "Mustn't make it too easy for you, my dear.", Max cackled as he bore down so heavily, she was soon crawling on her stomach. Anything---She would do anything-----!

1 minute.....

The book was just a few feet away, but the faster she tried to move, the heavier the boot on her back. She could feel her strength waning, but she knew this was her very last chance. Lose this fight and she would remain in hell for eternity. She could feel the material of her uniform shredding down the front of her body, along with her top layers of skin. She was on fire from the multitude of cuts, lacerations and abrasions, but nothing was going to stop her.

"5 seconds, my dear, and there's not a chance in Hell that you will reach it in time" Max laughed uproariously at his pathetic joke as he stepped up with his other leg and now stood on Kara's back. Kara attempted to take a few deep breaths, placed her palms flat on the cement, gathered every bit of fortitude she had ever possessed, reared up and flipped Max over as she flung herself the last foot and placed both hands around the grimoire. She started screaming, unable to help herself as she watched her hands turn to fire. Her screams were pitiful, though, compared to the roar the flowed from Max's mouth as he disappeared in a ball of flame.

0 seconds......

Got It!!!!! That was her last thought as she lost consciousnes
