2009 Scarlet Boa

Scene #25

It was the rainiest summer Olivia Caspera had ever seen. The yellow ball in the sky had been covered by dark lifeless clouds, and the pavement she walked on was now covered in wet spots. Olivia had just left her day job, working as a dental assistant in Chloe's father's clinic. Chloe was Olivia's best friend, and her father's clinic was eerily built on a forgotten piece of property that was once a home to a cemetery in the early 1900's. As Olivia hurried home, she was caught unprepared by the rain. Oddly enough the weather patterns indicated no chance of rain, however, dark clouds circled above the building of the clinic which was a sure sign that she was needed. As spirit seeker by night, Olivia had the ability to return paranormal energy into the after life, a gift or curse she wasn't sure which. At the early age of eleven, livia's first encounter with the spirit world showed up at her window one night while she was getting ready for bed. At first Olivia was naive to the rapid flickering of the lights in the room and also to her window, which flew open. When she felt the presence of what she always explained as a feeling of an unknown force taking over her body, leaving her helplessly breathless as if she were drowning, she knew it wasn't just the wind. Day after day went by, and the same event would happen every night. It wasn't until she went to school and someone had reminded her of her deceased neighbor and childhood friend Calvin, and teased her that he was a ghost. Olivia secretly believed that this was true, and spent the rest of the day remembering all the times Calvin would climb up her window, when his father was drunk and his mother fought until she had bruises on her arms. Weeks after when she realized who was in her room that night and read a countless number of books discovering ways to heal lost spirits, she tested her theories. With Calvin, it was easy. After Calvin passed away, his father sobered up and his parents' marriage was stronger than ever from healing each from the loss of their son. Olivia took it upon her self to wait until Calvin returned to her room, climbed down the window herself and ran to a tree in Calvin's backyard that peered into a window, where his parents were laughing and kissing and reminiscing about the good times with Calvin. She never saw him again after that night but opened her self to many spirits until now, at the age of 21.

After Olivia made it home, she changed into her black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and shoes, and grabbed her bag as she ran out the door to meet Chloe at their usual spot, deep in the park at a broken down picnic table in their home town, Spiritwood, Arkansas. Olivia made her way through the thick of the park and carefully took a seat on the picnic table, so she wouldn't get pricked by rusty nails. While waiting for Chloe who was always late, Olivia looked through the open canopy of oak branches and watched the night sky be engulfed by a deadly cloud. Bright green was the heart of the monster which stretched into greenish gray color that swirled into a deadly cyclone. Olivia closed her eyes, took in a few deep breaths and left her thoughts to become one with the paranormal energy above, in hopes to determine the strength and negativity of the force. It was nothing she had ever experienced before. She sat on the bench fighting for each breath, not letting the spirit drown her. It had begun to feel heavy in her chest, as if she wore a thirty pound weight that was holding her down as she fought to inhale. For the first time she felt she was unable to fight the spirit. Becoming weak, she fell onto the ground, grabbing her throat and gasping for air. Soon after, she could not fight the force and felt herself slipping into unconsciousness. From above she watched herself laying on the ground motionless, helpless and her once tanned skin now a shade of ghostly white had begun to turn a pale green. Olivia watched herself become a small shadow in the distance as the paranormal energy strengthened it's pull to collect her soul. When all hope was lost Olivia suddenly awoke, coughing violently as the tears rolled down her cheeks. Thankfully, Chloe had made it just in time, seconds before Olivia's soul was irrevocably lost into the paranormal dimension. She was there in front of her with a woven satchel filled with sage and lemon herb, a method they found by accident when Olivia had a similar, yet smaller magnitude, an experience they have tried to forget.
