2008 Scarlet Boa

Scene #6

Lilah sat at the edge of the pond listening to the voices of her children. They were supposed to be going to sleep but they were fighting it. Lilah wasnt worried, she knew they would drift off soon. She sat and watched the full moon reflect off the mirror surface of the water, thinking of her husband. He worked the night shift and she missed spending times like this with him.

Lilah cocked her head listening. Silence. She smiled. The children were asleep so she began. Casting a circle, she invoked the spirits of North, South, East and West. Beginning her chant, she called upon the Gods and Goddess of protection for her family and her home.

"Goddess of light, Goddess of home protect me and mine from that which roams. Keep them safe from within and without Banish all thoughts of dread and of doubt. Goddess of home, Goddess of light I ask this of you with all my might. As I wish, so mote it be."

Lilah broke the circle in the same manner as it was cast, carefully staying inside the salt lines until she was finished.

In the days and weeks to come, she would think of this night and the spell she cast. If only she had done it earlier or even the night before, things would be so different. Her children would still be happy, her family whole. But that was not to be.

As she walked back into the house a feeling of unrest came over her. Considering what she had just done, it didnt make sense. That was the whole point of the spell, to keep her family safe in mind and body. Lilah walked around the house checking doors and windows. Reaching the dining room, she saw that one of the french doors leading to the side patio was open. Panic set in as she ran up stairs to her children. One by one, she checked thier rooms her fear growing by the second. As she reached her oldest daughters room her fear came to life. Thirteen year old Sasha was gone.

Lilah ran downstairs as if the Devil were chasing her....and maybe he was. She checked every room and closet. Sasha was gone.

"911. I need to call 911....Oh my God my baby!!!! Operator, please my daughter is missing. Please, I need help!"

Faster than she thought possible, police were swarming her house. A female detective singled her out and sat her down. "Mrs. Matus, Im Detective Cleo Mead. I know this is difficult but you need to calm down.

Lilah realized she was rocking back & forth whimpering. She saw her husband Drew come in and go over to the kitchen where the other children were. She focused her gaze on the woman in front of her. "Im sorry, Im sorry. It just.....my baby. Someone stole my baby!" Lilah rose and began to pace in front of Cleo.

"Mrs. Matus I need to ask you some questions. OK? When did you first notice Sasha missing?"

"After I came back in the house, around midnight or so."

Cleo looked up from her pad, pencil in midair."Back in the house? Why were you outside so late?"

"I was.............meditating" Lilah answered hesitantly.

"Meditating. Do you usually make a circle of salt to meditate? Or were you doing something else?"

"What are you implying, DETECTIVE?" Lilah spewed angrily.

"A circle of salt, and one of my officers found melted candles and wooden bowls in the same area. Were you meditating or performing a 'spell'?" The Detective said this last word with obvious disdain.

"Does it really matter what I was doing? My daughter is missing and thats all that counts!" Lilah practically screamed.

Detective Mead sneered. "Yea, it matters. If witchcraft is involved, I may be forced to suspect foul play. You know, human sacrifice and all that." Mead shook her head in disgust as she scribbled on her pad.

Lilah rose up enraged, her fists clenched. She could feel the power in her hands and was so tempted to use it right now. But for Sasha's sake....and only for her sake, she restrained herself. Her daughter was the most important thing right now. The ONLY thing.

All of a sudden, the room spun and the lights flickered. Lilah lay unconsious on the floor and every bulb in the room had blown.
