Scene #42
"This coffee is great," Anna said. "Yeah, I go to this place
a lot," Brian responded. "Maybe I should go to coffee places
more often, although Mark would just tell me that I'm ingesting
empty calories and caffeine, neither or which is good for me."
"I'm glad to hear you're still with Mark," Brian quipped. "I've
missed your sarcasm." "Doubtful." "No, really, it can be
refreshing at times." "I bet Mark thinks its bad for you."
Anna laughed, "Yes, he says that people like you are a bad
influence on me because it makes me more ‘snippy', less of a lady,"
and she took another large gulp of her frozen vanilla latte.
"Well, I think Mark is a bad influence on you, he's making you
boring, and I'd rather you be fun than a lady," Brian said.
"Well I'm working on him, and I could never be boring." "True.
And hey, Bush is working on the Middle East, and with how your
relationship is going, maybe you should get a few pointers from
him." "Maybe I will, Mark really likes W, he's very much in
support of him." "My approval rating of Mark just dropped below
my approval rating of Bush." "At least he's making an
impression." "Yeah, and a great one at that. Aren't you here
because he cancelled plans with you at the last minute?" Brian
asked. "Yes, and I thought of you, because of how understanding
you are." "You need more friends." Anna shrugged, "You were
my top choice because you make me laugh, and I needed that."
"Oh, I didn't know you came here to talk about my love life."
"That bad, huh?" "As far as jokes go, I would file it under
classics." "I'm sorry Brian." "Not as much as I am, but on
the bright side, I save money on all major Hallmark occasions."
"You were always a glass half full type of guy." "I got that
from you. Before we were friends I was cynical." "I can't
imagine." "Try." Anna's phone buzzed, "Oh God, sorry, I
wasn't expecting that, hold on." Brian watched as she picked up
the phone and answered it. He knew who it was and when she turned
back to him he knew what he would have to say, "So Mark's other
plans fell through and you're pinch hitting?" "I told him that I
would be there in a half hour so we still have time to finish our
coffee." "Thanks, but I don't think you're going to need that
much time, and you can go whenever, normally I come here alone so
I'm not going to be to upset." "But I came here to meet you. I
would feel bad running out on you." "Don't, really I'll be
fine." "Well, I can't think of a reason for me to leave right
now, so tell me more about what you've been up to." "To be quite
honest, this coffee date is the most exciting thing to happen to me
in the last few weeks." "I see you're still good at the guilt
trip." "Try growing up Jewish and see if you're not."
"You didn't grow up Jewish." "That would have worked if we
hadn't known each other since college." "Best friends. That
means you can't get away with blatantly obvious lies." "Yeah but
it doesn't mean that I can't try." "On that note, we should do
this more often," she checked her PDA, "how does next Tuesday at
lunch sound to you? We can have a standing appointment." "Sounds
great, does this mean you'll be heading out?" "Mark is waiting
across town, and you know how he feels about waiting for me."
"Yeah, I do," Brian said as he watched her get up and wave as she
walked out the door. He waited for it to close. He sighed as he
whispered under his breath, "He feels the same as me. But he only
has to wait five minutes, while I'm going on seven years."
