Scene #19
"Who are you?" she raggedly gasped "Gabriella, I think we
both know the answer to that." Shaking in disbelief, she
whispered, "It's not possible. No one has made me feel like this in
years. Not since.... I don't understand." "It's me, babe,
but there's no time to explain. You have to leave. Now."
"Wait a minute. You think you can kiss me and tell me to leave like
that? With no other explanation? Why? Is there something that I
don't know? That I should know?" "It's not what you think,
Gabby," he murmured "Oh, now you're psychic, too?" she
intoned with an arched brow. "Well, why don't you tell me what it
is, since I have no idea what to think about this situation. For
goodness sakes, we were to be married and the home that we were to
share blew up before my eyes. If you wanted to call off the
wedding, there were easier ways of doing it. There was no need to
pretend to die. " Stabbing her finger into his chest, she
elaborated. "Do you have any idea what I went through, thinking the
body they found in the rubble was yours? Do you have any idea what
I went through when I identified your ring? Buried your supposed
remains? What I went through as I cried myself to sleep at night?
As I tried to pick up the pieces of my life and get through the
long days without you?" "There were things I couldn't
tell you, that you didn't know about me. That you still don't know
about me. There was no way to explain without endangering you. I
still can't tell you much." She blew an exasperated breath.
"Save the story. I don't want or need to know it. What we had is
over and has been for 5 years. Let's just pretend this meeting
never happened. Goodbye, Antonio." Abruptly, she made her
way towards the door. He couldn't let it end on that note. His next
words brought her up short. "I was undercover and had been
made. People were willing to harm you to get to me. I couldn't let
them hurt you. My superiors was erasing my past so that I wouldn't
put you in danger. I thought I was doing what was best for you. You
were never meant to suffer." A short bark of laughter ripped
from her throat. "You thought you were doing what was best for me?
How noble of you." Casting him a mocking look, she said, "Well, you
were wrong. I've suffered every day since I saw that house explode.
All my dreams were destroyed that day. But I'm tough and I managed
to survive. Now, if you'll excuse me, our, my children are waiting
for me." With that parting shot, she closed the door on his
stunned face.
