Her blue eyes stared back at him in shock. "You...I..."
Kellen understood her confusion. The day he woke up to find himself a ghost wasn't something he soon would forget. "Abby, I know this is a surprise..." He started to move toward her. "No!" She stepped back and clutched her robe closer. "It can't be true, Kellen. I see you."
He gave her a rueful smile. "Not all ghosts are invisible." His gaze caught hers. "Especially when they want to be seen."
The light flickered across her face, accenting her cheekbones. How he loved Abby with all his heart, but when it'd come to this, he had to let her know the truth. Even though he knew it could be the end of their relationship.
He held out his hand. "Abby"
She stared at it for a moment, then shook her head. "No, please, I need time."
He let his hand drop. Yes, he understood she wanted time to absorb the news he wasn't a living person. His body was that of a man long dead, but inside, his heart still ached for the woman in front of him, even after five years.
A rustling noise at the window caught his attention. No, it was too soon for them to take him away. He needed more time with his beautiful Abby. He wanted to show her how he ached at leaving her behind. He needed to show her the love he still felt for her.
The noise grew louder, a whistling sound. Abby’s eyes flitted from Kellen to the window.
"What is that?"
"It’s them," he told her.
She clutched her robe even tighter. "Them?"
He nodded, his eyes growing misty at the thought of having to leave his beloved so soon. "They're here for me."
"Oh." She stared at the window for a long time, as the crescendo outside turned soft and steady.
Finally, she turned her gaze back to him. "Why Kellen?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"Why they're coming for me?" His mind raced furiously, wondering how he could escape his would be captors. He wanted more time with Abby.
"No, why did you come back?" Her eyes implored him to tell the truth, and he knew he could never lie to her.
"Because I love you."
"But you knew we could never be together...forever." She stumbled over the last word, as if finally realizing he'd have to leave her again.
He moved smoothly to her side, as the whispering sounds outside grew restless. Touching her hand, he rubbed his fingers against her soft skin. "I wanted one last time with you."
She watched his hand caressing her, as if coming to a decision. "I would like that too."
He closed his eyes. Thank God. "Come, let’s get out of here." As he held out his hand, she hesitated. "What’s wrong?" he asked.
Her gaze grew troubled. "I just have one question."
He lifted an eyebrow at her. "Yes?"
"How do ghosts have sex?"
