Scene #98
Their hearts nearly pounding out of their chests, Mike’s
more so then Anne’s, as they ran away from the horrific scene they
left behind them just around the corner. Anne had warned Mike that
smoking a pack a day would eventually come and bite him in the ass,
Mike never listened though, just as he wasn’t listening to Anne now
as she called to him from an old shed she found rotting in the
shadows.
"Get over here Mike!" Anne hissed, however Mike was to focused on
breathing and his burning heart to hear Anne’s desperate cry. She
quickly grabbed Mike’s arm as he began to run past her and the
shed, bringing him down on top of her as they tumbled into the
shed. Anne quickly kicked the door shut just as footsteps could be
heard racing around the corner. Anne’s eyes closed as she silently
prayed that they would run by and not happen to hear her racing
heart or Mike’s ragged breath and stifled coughs. Her prayers were
answered as the footsteps began to fade, though they were far from
safety and still too close to what was beyond the corner; what
should have never been seen by either of them let alone any sane
being that existed on this planet. Anne’s eyes opened seeing that
the shed they had taken solace in was in worse shape then most
cardboard boxes she had seen littering the alleys. Mike coughed,
drawing her attention to the fact that he was still laying on top
of her. Mike looked down into her pale blue eyes with his stunning
green ones, his shaggy wet hair sticking to his high cheek bones.
Anne lifted a hand and gently pushed a strand of his hair away from
his face. Mike’s breath was still short and ragged from the
running, but his recently slowed heart jumped at the feeling of her
touch. It had been months since they had been together, both of
them left broken hearted and haunted with the fairy tale romance
they once shared. Both had made silent promises of never going
back to the other out of fear and shame of what they had lost,
haunted by nightmares about their poor baby girl. They had pushed
all emotions aside, becoming cold and distant, having nothing to
talk about besides work; all emotions gone, until now. Looking
into each other’s eyes, seeing traces of what once was, all of
their lost passion and love came flooding back.
"Anne..." Mike’s rough, soothing voice started "I need you Anne...I
always have..." His voice caught in his throat. Of all places and
times for him to admit this to the woman he loves and would always
love, he had finally found enough courage to confront her as both
of their lives were at stake; though better to tell her now, before
it was too late.
